For example, the number 325.31 means 3 <b>hundreds<\/b>, 2 <b>tens<\/b>, 5 <b>ones<\/b>, 3 <b>tenths<\/b> and 1 <b>hundredth<\/b>. Humans decided to group in tens because that\u2019s how many fingers\/thumbs we have. It made counting and arithmetic a whole lot easier. If so, you\u2019ve been misled! Here\u2019s an example: 2.3 x10 is not 2.30, it is 23.0. What\u2019s actually happening when you multiply by ten is that every digit shifts along one place to the left because there are now ten times as many of each digits. It has to be greater than 0.9, but also greater than 0.99, and 0.999 and so on. A fraction is one whole number divided by another (but we can\u2019t divide by zero). Every fraction, small or large, positive or negative, can be written as a decimal. For example, 1\/2 = 0.5, 1\/3 = 0.333\u2026 and 1\/7 = 0.142857142857\u2026 \u2013 where the \u2018142857\u2019 repeats forever!<\/p>\n<p><b>6.<\/b><br \/><b>But not every decimal is a fraction<\/b>. Some numbers are so strange that they can\u2019t be expressed as a fraction. The number \u03c0, for example, which we use to calculate circle measurements, has a decimal expansion that goes on forever and never repeats (it starts 3.14159). It cannot be written as a fraction.<\/p>\n<p><b>7.<\/b><br \/>Different countries and languages use different notation for the decimal point. For example, in Taiwan and Singapore the point is placed is placed mid-line, so 23\u00b789 rather than 23.89. In many European countries, a comma is used instead: <b>23,89<\/b>. Horses for courses!<\/p>\n<p><b>8.<\/b><br \/>Decimals are used in a range of real-world situations to represent different amounts. Money, weight and height all use decimal points.
