How to get the most out of Math-Whizz

Below is a quick guide to Math-Whizz and how to get the most from virtual tutoring.

The initial assessment

Your child’s journey will begin with an initial assessment. This takes around 45 minutes to complete (sometimes longer, depending on your child’s pace and learning needs).

Your child can complete the assessment in multiple sittings; it will automatically save their progress.

It is fine to help your child read instructions and navigate between screens but resist that parental urge to answer questions for them. The Tutor needs to work out your child’s Math Age, not yours!

It’s okay for your child to click ‘Don’t Know Yet’.

What is ‘Math Age’?

Once the initial assessment is complete this will give the Tutor an accurate understanding of your child’s needs.
The Tutor will calculate your child’s ‘Math Age’ – a Math Age of 9 means your child is working at the level of a 9-year-old and so on.

Three steps to using virtual tutoring and unlocking your child's potential!

Step 1: Sixty minutes a week

Get your child to commit to 60 minutes a week on Math-Whizz. This will result, on average, in 18 months of progress in the first year. Schedule this time each week by downloading your weekly planner.
Your child will feel more committed to the goal if they have filled it in themselves. 10–20 minute sessions spread throughout the week works best to embed learning as a habit.
With 4 Progressions your child will make accelerated progress.

Step 2: Make it Sticky

Your child may be overenthusiastic about Math-Whizz to begin with. Paradoxically, you’re better off containing their usage to the recommended levels with encouraging prompts such as “Well Done! You’ve done enough for today”. A regular sustained routine works best.

Sometimes, usually after 3-6 weeks, you may notice their initial enthusiasm wane as the novelty wears off (the ‘3-6 week blues’). This is a decisive moment for you as a parent. This is where you make it or break it for your child’s learning.

Find a way to help your child persevere through the next few weeks, they will come out the other side and their learning routine will become a habit. You and your child are then set up for success.

Step 3: Stay Involved

Make sure the routine your child has agreed to is sustained every week. Sit down once a week to look through your child’s reports and check that they are making progress. Then send a message or a sticker through the Parent Account – it takes just a few moments and let’s face it, your child loves your attention.
